This role is highly influential and hands-on, responsible for shaping scalable, resilient, and high-performance systems that enable best-in-class digital commerce and discovery experiences. core responsibilities As a Staff Engineer, you will work as the technical leader for the platform(s) your team delivers. You will be counted on as a leader in your technology space as you contribute to all areas of development and operations (pre-production to production). You will spend a fair amount of time planning the evolution of the tools and systems that make up your platform, guiding your team's roadmap year to year. You will contribute heavily to our Engineering principles by maintaining the practical "how we do it" documentation, and by partnering with Senior Leadership and Principal Engineers to lead a Community of Practice aimed at increasing Engineer training and development for your technology stack. Staff Engineers work to elevate our engineering community by designing/introducing tools and systems that accelerate and support our engineering best practices. Define and evolve service-oriented and API-first architectures with a focus on scalability, reliability, low latency, and extensibility. Drive system design reviews, architectural governance, and technical decision-making across multiple teams. Lead the design of content, catalog publishing, and merchandising platforms, enabling rapid, accurate, and scalable product launches across regions and channels. Architect end-to-end catalog publishing pipelines, including ingestion, enrichment, validation, transformation, and distribution to downstream consumers (Search, Category, PDP, SEO, and external partners). Drive the design of workflow-driven publishing capabilities, including approvals, role-based access control, preview environments, scheduling, rollback, and auditability. Partner closely with Product Managers, UX, Data, Platform, and Infrastructure teams to translate business needs into robust technical solutions. Facilitate an Engineering Community of Practice for your platform Contribute to engineering automation, management or development of production level systems Owns the delivery lifecycle for your select platform Collaborates with Architecture, Security and Operations throughout product development life cycle qualifications 10+ years of professional software engineering experience, including designing and operating large-scale distributed systems. Strong hands-on experience building and operating backend services and APIs in a cloud-native environment. Proven experience with Search, Browse, Category, PDP, or SEO-related platforms in a retail or eCommerce ecosystem. Deep understanding of system design, scalability, performance optimization, and reliability engineering. Strong proficiency in at least one backend programming language (Java, Node.js, Python, etc.). Experience with AWS (or other public cloud providers) and modern DevOps practices. Ability to translate complex business problems into clear, maintainable technical solutions.
