Laboratory Technician – Hospital

Job Summary

MedLabs Canada is seeking a dedicated and detail-oriented Laboratory Technician to join our hospital laboratory team. As a Laboratory Technician, you will play a critical role in performing diagnostic tests and analyses that assist physicians in diagnosing and treating patients. You will work with state-of-the-art equipment, ensuring accurate and timely delivery of test results while maintaining the highest standards of quality and safety. This role is ideal for individuals passionate about healthcare, with a keen eye for detail and a commitment to improving patient outcomes.

Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare, process, and analyze clinical samples including blood, urine, and tissue specimens in accordance with laboratory protocols.
  • Operate, calibrate, and maintain laboratory equipment and instruments, ensuring accuracy and reliability of test results.
  • Perform routine and specialized diagnostic tests, record findings, and report results promptly to the medical team.
  • Ensure compliance with health and safety standards, including proper handling and disposal of biohazardous materials.
  • Maintain laboratory records, update databases, and ensure documentation accuracy and confidentiality.
  • Participate in quality assurance and control activities to ensure laboratory efficiency and performance.
  • Collaborate with healthcare professionals, providing technical expertise and supporting diagnostic procedures.
  • Assist in training new staff and mentoring junior technicians as required.

Required Skills and Qualifications

  • Diploma or degree in Medical Laboratory Technology, Clinical Laboratory Science, or a related field.
  • Certification or registration with a recognized regulatory body (preferred but not mandatory depending on jurisdiction).
  • Proficiency in operating laboratory equipment such as centrifuges, analyzers, and microscopes.
  • Strong knowledge of laboratory safety protocols, infection control, and specimen handling.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work accurately under pressure while managing multiple tasks.
  • Effective communication skills and ability to collaborate with a multidisciplinary team.
  • Detail-oriented with strong organizational and documentation skills.

Experience

  • Minimum of 2 years of experience working as a Laboratory Technician in a hospital or clinical laboratory setting is preferred.
  • Experience in diagnostic testing, sample preparation, and quality control procedures is highly desirable.
  • Familiarity with electronic health record (EHR) systems and laboratory information systems (LIS) is an advantage.

Working Hours

  • Full-time position with standard hospital shifts.
  • Rotational shifts including day, evening, and occasional weekends depending on hospital requirements.
  • Flexibility to respond to emergency cases as needed.

  • Sound understanding of laboratory practices, medical terminology, and diagnostic procedures.
